First of this bridge was built during the 19th century without any suspenders. Suspension bridges are used for highways, where the span of a bridge is more than 650ft. Essentially a suspension bridge consists of the following elements: (i) cable, (ii) suspenders, (iii) deck including the stiffening girder, (iv) supporting tower, (v) anchorage.

The cables here are made from thousands of steel wires bound together tightly, a single as thick as 0.1 inches can support over half a ton without failing. Due to the materials used for construction and its complexity, the cost of construction is very high.

The uniformly distributed load or equal load is transferred from the deck to the main cables through suspenders. Since the cable is the main load bearing member, the curvature of unstiffened bridge changes as the load moves on the deck. In order to avoid that, the decking is stiffened with three hinged or two hinged stiffening girder. The stiffening girder transfers the uniformly distributed load to each suspender,   irrespective of the load position on the deck.
