What does it mean? An arc is basically a part of a circumference of a circle which may be looked upon as a curved girder, either a solid rib or a braced, supported at its ends on abutments and carrying transverse loading. Since the loading acts at an angle to the axis of the girder, three restraining forces are developed thrust, shear force and bending moment. They span between 200ft – 800ft.

Here, the basic principle followed is a curved design which does not transfer, forces vertically downwards but transfers, it through the arch to the end supports. The horizontal thrust developed is transferred to the abutments.

Greater the curvature of the bridge, greater is the effects of tension on the underside of the bridge. In order to avoid that, buttress (a huge block of stone or concrete) is placed near supports to counter-act the horizontal thrust produced by the arch. In cases with longer span where the weight of buttress needed is more for bigger arches and bigger the arch, greater is the tension which, indirectly affects the economic value of construction, in order to avoid that engineers came with an idea of dividing the single arch into multiple arches thereby facilitating economic and less complex structure.
